BSS Soundweb london emulates monitor console for diana krall
22 August 2005

As Diana Krall's leisurely world tour moves into its second year, monitor engineer Eric Laliberte has found a way to take his monitor mix to every show, despite the fact that the tour is carrying a minimal amount of equipment. His solution is a radical one: to replace his monitor console with two new BLU-80s from BSS, part of the Soundweb London processing system, and create a mix control surface on his laptop computer.

Laliberte is the first front-rank engineer to harness the processing power of the BLUs in this way, creating a virtual console that confers extensive operational advantages without compromising the artists' mix. Not only can he fine-tune his stage system from a tablet anywhere in the venue, but also he can pack the gear into a small flightcase at the end of the show.

"The sound quality is awesome," says Laliberte, "it's just a matter of getting used to the interface. Mostly I use the tablet during set-up, controlling my laptop which is hard-wired to the BLUs. This means I can move around the venue with my virtual mixer in my hand: during set-up, I can adjust equipment from its location, and that saves me having to walk back and forth to see how it sounds."

During the shows, Eric Laliberte is at the traditional monitor engineer's station at the side of the stage. "I have plenty of opportunities to customise the software. I have a separate page for each mix, and I can have a different page for each person's requirements, which provides really easy access: you can't do this on any digital console that I've seen. Also I can customise my layouts and show any function as buttons or slides, or whatever I want."

With substantially more DSP power than the last generation of Soundweb processors, the new BLU-80s allow Laliberte to configure the unit in a variety of ways. A maximum of 32x32 network channels is provided by a Peak Audio CobraNetTM CM-1 Module. This card allows up to 32 inputs and 32 outputs of digital audio at 48kHz and up to 16 inputs and 16 outputs at 96kHz sampling rates to reach each BLU-80 frame. On the Diana Krall stage, "I've got 24 inputs, but since I can only run 16 maximum on each BLU-80 unit, I transfer audio to the other unit in order to mix it down to what I need."

Other features of the BSS BLU-80, and its sister unit the BLU-32, include:
· Integral multi-voltage switched mode PSU for lightweight and universal AC mains operation
· 12 analogue control ports and 6 logic outputs for GPI hardware interfacing using faders, pots, switches etc
· Front USB port for PC control and rear RS-232 port for third party serial control
· Ethernet port for control network

The BLU-80 can accept 4 input or output cards, each card being either 4 inputs or 4 outputs. This means that a BLU-80 can be easily configured at base or in the field to provide a wide variation of I/O configurations.
